At the end of the 60s, the Vietnam War was already affecting almost all spheres of society in America. It was at this time that Jude and Lucy met. At that time, many could not distinguish right from wrong, and lies from the truth. Jude comes to the states from the British town of Liverpool. He wants to meet his father here. After finding him at Princeton University, he learns that Dad was completely unaware of his existence.<br />
Here, the main character gets to know Max Kerrigaon, with whom he later became very good friends. Max had a sister named Lucy, whom Jude immediately set his eyes on. Having succumbed to the influence of the main character, Max decides to drop out of university and go to New York with him. There, friends rent an apartment and find the company of people like them. Together they spend time with freedom-loving people, sharing new ideas of the coming era.<br />
Max gets a job as a taxi driver, and Jude decides to embody the talent of an artist. The guys' neighbors turned out to be a girl from Ohio, a guitarist and an aspiring singer. Soon they are joined by Max's sister Lucy, whose boyfriend died in the war. Now big changes are expected in the life of the company, as Jude begins to take care of the girl. Together they have to go through a lot in this difficult time, when many familiar things were not yet known to us.<br />
